City Electric Rates 99.99% Reliable

The City of Moundridge is working towards being recognized as one of the most reliable utility providers in the country. The City has its sights set on receiving the RP3 designation from the American Public Power Association. The RP3 program demonstrates industry-recognized leading practices for public power utilities in four important disciplines:

• Reliability
• Safety
• Workforce Development
• System Improvement

The American Public Power Association members include approximately 2,000 public power utilities that provide electricity to 49 million people in 49 states.

According to a recent study of the Moundridge electrical system, using the E-Reliability Tracker, it was shown the City had an average system availability time of 99.99% in 2017. This means the City Electrical service was only down .01% of the time in 2017.

The Customer Average Interruption Duration Index shows the Average Customer was without service a total of 26.06 minutes in 2017.

There were nine unplanned electrical outages in Moundridge last year. Three were electrical failures, two were due to construction; one was caused by a squirrel; one was caused by a piece of equipment that wore out; one was determined to have been caused by a manufacturing defect in a part of the electrical system and one was caused by a lightning strike.

The downtown business district and the east circuit of the City had “0” interruptions in electrical service last year. There were brief periods of outages with the overhead circuit; underground circuit and on the West circuit of the City’s electrical system totaling an average of 17.114 minutes of electrical service interruption for our customers.

The City of Moundridge purchases electrical power from the McPherson BPU and distributes it to its local customers through an electrical system that is completely owned by the citizens of Moundridge, operated and maintained by the City of Moundridge and their staff with decisions being made right here in Moundridge.

The city is in the process of upgrading the older parts of the electric system. This is an ongoing project spanning over several years.
